A VOLUNTEER'S VIEW From my own experience it appears that Volunteers do not fall into a particular class, belong to a particular profession or any particular age group, equally it appears that they may be motivated by a variety of reasons, underpinned perhaps by a desire to be of benefit to the community. For myself, after several visits I started volunteering work with the C.A.B. and also at a centre for adults with learning difficulties, Similarly on a less regular basis I held the position of Treasurer for a local respite care charity. Some 12 months later and on the strength of having gained valuable experience in the voluntary sector, I was subsequently accepted for professional Social Work training. It must be said that voluntary work is no easy option, but the rewards, whether they be spiritual, self-fulfilment, a route to Further Education, or as a "back door" to a new career, are most definitely worth the effort. |
